The river has 365 islands, some of them unexplored- the most famous one being Fort Island which will be your first stop. Many riverside resorts, including Sloth Island, where you will be having lunch, and Baganara Island Resort, are along the Essequibo River. You will also pay a visit to the small mining town of Bartica and Baracara Falls is the perfect place to get a much-needed massage. Fort Kyk-over-al, a 400-year-old ruin, is the oldest fort established in former Dutch territory.
